People Like Us
People Like Us is a reflective song about grace, safeguarding, and the uncomfortable truth that Jesus came for people whose stories may be difficult for us to hear. It recognises that love does not mean ignoring harm or removing wise boundaries. Instead, it asks what it looks like for the church to protect the vulnerable, support those carrying painful experiences, trust faithful leadership, and still leave room for repentance, restoration and grace.
People Like Us explores one of the harder parts of following Jesus: loving people whose past may make us uncomfortable, afraid or unsure how to respond.
Jesus was repeatedly criticised for spending time with people others preferred to avoid. He never treated sin lightly, but neither did He treat sinners as beyond hope. The gospel reminds us that every one of us needs grace, and that none of us comes to God because our story is cleaner than somebody else's.
At the same time, Christian love is not naïve. Some actions cause deep wounds, trust may take a long time to rebuild, and protecting children and vulnerable people matters deeply. Healthy boundaries, wise safeguarding and accountable church leadership are therefore not barriers to grace — they can be part of what loving people well looks like.
The song also recognises those who carry scars of their own. Forgiveness and welcome can be especially difficult when someone else's story touches something painful in our past. We were never meant to navigate those situations alone. We need Jesus, wise shepherds, and a church family willing to walk patiently alongside one another.
At its heart, People Like Us asks a simple but challenging question: if Jesus came seeking the lost, how can His church both guard the flock and find the lost?
Not by pretending the past does not matter, but by believing that the cross does.
